She keeps a dead field mouse in the glove box of her Dodge Coronet. And because Eileen’s favorite topic is Eileen, she does not skimp on the details. Eileen is as vivid and human as they come. “I liked books about awful things - murder, illness, death.”īut murder, illness and death are so generic - and Eileen is anything but generic. “I didn’t really read books about flowers or home economics,” she tells us a few pages later. “I looked like a girl you’d expect to see on a city bus,” begins “Eileen,” Ottessa Moshfegh’s seductive novel, “reading some clothbound book from the library about plants or geography, perhaps wearing a net over my light brown hair.” This is the eponymous Eileen, and we quickly learn that any assumptions we might make about her from her appearance would be dead wrong.

The book was made into a hugely successful movie starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. This book recounts Karen’s life growing up on a coffee plantation in Kenya. Beryl grew up on a farm very close to Kembu Camp, Nakuru, one of our first stops on the Grand Adventurer.Ģ. Ernest Hemingway said of her prose that it made him feel “as though I was a carpenter who could barely cobble together a pig pen”. Beryl was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west, was a pioneer in the aviation field and a legend amongst African bush pilots. However, the following list of 16 books is a great place to get started and I think you’ll find your trip even more enjoyable as the written page becomes reality on the Grand Adventurer.ġ. The history of the region is finely woven with that of Europe, India, the Middle East, China, colonialism, and the Cold War, not to mention the rise of man. The land is simply too vast, the flora and fauna diverse beyond imagination, and the cultures you encounter are as different as those of Europe. Nothing can totally prepare you for a seventy-five day Grand Adventurer trip with Oasis Overland. Takahashi goes on to play at some club or whatnot and Mari, who is studying Chinese, ends up helping the Chinese prostitute beaten by Shirakawa. Takahashi recognises Mari and approaches her, the two talk about fake-deep things. Set in Tokyo, this slight novel takes place over the course of a single night, rotating between four characters: we have Mari Asai, who is Not Like Other Girls™, who is spending her night reading at Denny’s, a restaurant chain, Takahashi Tetsuya, trombone player who is as dull as a brick and prone to spouting sexist comments (A girl is reading? A girl knows what a trombone is? MADNESS!), Eri, Mari’s beautiful sister who seems trapped in a realm between dreams and reality, and Shirakawa, a man who beats up a Chinese prostitute in a love hotel nearby Mari. Credit where credit’s due, Murakami certainly knows how to create and maintain a certain ambience. Having heard a lot about the genius of Murakami over the years I was excepting something a bit more out of After Dark, a novel which, at the risk of incurring the wrath of Murakami aficionados, failed to captivate me. Pia and Stefan suspect that Katharina has been spirited away by the supernatural. But, this being real life, she doesn’t return. Then, like a character in a Grimm’s fairy tale, she disappears. Katharina was last seen on a float in a parade, dressed as Snow White. The only one who still wants to be her friend is StinkStefan, the most unpopular child in school.īut then something else captures the community’s attention: the vanishing of Katharina Linden. But tell that to the citizens of Pia’s little German hometown of Bad Münstereifel, or to the classmates who shun her. It isn’t ten-year-old Pia’s fault that her grandmother dies in a freak accident. The Vanishing of Katharina Linden is an unforgettable debut-at once chilling and endearing, haunting and richly insightful-the story of one girl’s big heart and even bigger imagination, and of a world full of mystery, good, and evil. Not since The Elegance of the Hedgehog has a book arrived in America from Europe on such wings of critical praise and popularity. I love dragon books, and I love to support Louisiana authors. All thoughts, comments and ratings are my own. Soulfire is off to a great start and I look forward to reading more in the Nightwing series.ĭisclaimer: Copy provided by Kensington Books via NetGalley with the sole purpose of an honest review. The banter between Jessen and Lucius was fun. I also enjoyed watching Lucius and Jessen fall for each other. The humans have one tail and the dragons have a another. It was interesting to learn about both sides of the story told to children in this world about the King of Dragons and a Princess. Morgan and humans do not mix, this brings out problems for this couple. Lucius Nightwing is protective of a human, he feels the pull towards her and once his species finds their mate they have no control of it, but the racism is at an all time hi in this world. I love dragon’s and when this one popped up to read, I had to give it a try. The characters are defined and the world description is vivid and detailed. This is my first read by author Juliette Cross. Soulfire is book one in the Nightwing series by Juliette Cross.
